Formulize has been around for eight years. Today there is a lively, albeit small, community using this software all around the world, from the University of Toronto, to wilderness rescue teams in Siberia. This presentation will be a case study of how we got here from a few crazy decisions eight years ago. I will look back on the technological path that we've taken, and see what the truly critical factors were (and what were dead ends). As we'll see, the technological path has affected the business side along the way, giving us a compelling story about the power of freely shared code to create opportunities.
