Federating the Social Web

Social Networking continues to grow both in personal use as well as the enterprise. However, the dominate networks of today exist primarily as walled gardens - silos of users. The Federated Social Web is a growing movement to connect users across networks to allow following, status updates, favourites, etc between users on different systems. OStatus (http://ostatus.org/) is an open protocol we've developed at StatusNet (http://status.net/) to implement these features within our software. We'll cover who's implementing it today, and what kind of control a federated model gives companies and individuals. We'll also give first steps on what you can do to create your presence in a federated social web.

Fedora ARM Build System

The ARM processor is the most popular processor in the world, with over 1 billion produced annually. ARM based systems also draw very little power, with most using less then 10 watts. The main problem with ARM based systems is the lack of software support for those wishing to take advantage of these low cost computers, our hope is to change that.
We have created a Koji Build System for ARM based computers. Koji is the software used by the Fedora Project to test applications and ensure they work on different architectures before being made available to end users. In order to accomplish this we have built a small scale server farm of ARM based machines. These machines report to a central server and request "jobs" , in our case software packages that will be tested with the results being reported back to the maintainer of that software. If the package will not work on ARM, the maintainer will be notified automatically and has the ability to find out why using the web interface. Once the needed changes are made, they may submit the packages again for testing until the software works on ARM as well as the primary architectures, x86 and x86_64. This allows developers to use ARM based machines without having to relearn another operating system, and to take advantage of the over 15,000 packages maintained by the Fedora Project.

FLOSS Manuals: Too Good to Be Free

Documentation. It tends to slip between the cracks of many FOSS projects. It's not because documentation isn't seen as being important. Many projects just don't have the time or the extra hands needed to bang out those words. That's where FLOSS Manuals comes to the rescue.

Started by Adam Hyde, FLOSS Manuals aims to create quality free documentation for free software. And FLOSS Manuals does it using Open Source principles.

In this presentation, Scott Nesbitt will discuss:

* The origins and aims of FLOSS Manuals
* How the project works
* The types of people who contribute to FLOSS Manuals
* What a book sprint is and how one works
* The good, bad, and ugly of the FLOSS Manuals book sprint that took place at Toronto Open Source Week 2010

Freebase and the semantic web

Freebase.com is the world's most ambitious, open-licensed, semantic database of all knowledge.
I would like to talk about the project, which is barely known, though has the capacity to change the internet dramatically.

My work over the past few years, all open sourced, has focused on integrating the freebase structure into
the web experience
http://vimeo.com/13992710

After discussing what freebase is, and how it works, I will talk about
the work i've done concerning integration and augmentation of wikipedia, question answering, argument mapping, wikipedia citation analysis, and mapping relationships between webpages.

I aim to share my excitement about the free organisation of human knowledge.

How CMS architectures affect dev. communities

There are many different kinds of content management systems out there, and from the outside, they might look similar, but under the hood, their architectures are often quite different.

What effect does this difference have on their communities? This presentation will argue that the effect is quite large.

We will examine the architecture of three different CMSs: Drupal, ImpressCMS/XOOPS, and TikiWiki. They represent three very different architectural approaches, from highly modular (Drupal) to monolithic (TikiWiki). Arguably, the nature of the communities around each CMS can be attributed largely to their architecture, and the kind of participation it encourages.

This presentation will include a detailed technical examination of how the CMSs function, some knowledge of PHP will be an asset but not required. The balance of the discussion will be around the communities, and will not require technical knowledge.

Industry-Academic Partnerships for Open Source Research and Development

Basing business system software on open source code has both advantages and challenges.
This presentation will provide examples of how partnering with an academic institution for research and development of open source software projects in industry contexts can result in commercial advantage for industry and provide exceptional learning opportunities for students. A variety of approaches and different business models from very small proprietorships to medium enterprises will be discussed.

Microsoft Loves PHP. Yes, Seriously.

It's been said that Microsoft did not always "play well" with the Open Source community. However, throughout the years, Microsoft has been making interoperability and open source a focus area in an attempt to bridge that divide. To date, Microsoft has made significant strides in building better relationships with the open source community. These milestones include software tooling and platforms to help the open source community build great software on the Microsoft platform, but it's not limited to just that. This presentation will outline not only some of the tools that allow Open Source developers build great software, but also how Microsoft has reached out to the Open Source community and how they continue to do so.

Mozilla Drumbeat: open innovation for everyone

Mozilla exists to make sure the web stays open and awesome. With recent launch of Drumbeat.org, we're now moving beyond Firefox to build more things that make the web better -- not just software. Examples include: open subtitles for every video on the web; free web developer skills training for people around the world; simple tools that unleash the full power of open video on the web. We're doing this by reaching out to new kinds of people - teachers, filmmakers, lawyers, journalists -- and you. Come to this session to learn more about how you can help shape the future of the web.

Open Source Configuration Sharing by Power Users/Developers Using YAML in a Wiki

Open source is a lot of the time about the code. But what about the configurations? In some cases, configuring a platform can take significant time and depending on the configuration, the resulting application can be very different and address varied uses. The power users/developers of TikiWiki CMS/Groupware had exactly this problem of configuration being too tedious and full of reinventing the wheel each time. They then figured out a way to share configurations as easy-to-learn YAML inside a wiki so that other power users/developers can make use, enhance and combine these modular application configurations, leading to new and innovative applications that are easily deployed through an automated system. The same approach should be possible for configuration sharing for many different platforms, not just TikiWiki.

openPETRA: A free and easy-to-use administration software package for non-profit organisations

I will present the open source project openPETRA (www.openpetra.org), which is in ongoing development and released under the GPLv3 license.

The goal of openPETRA is to provide an easy-to-use software system for the administration of non-profit organisations. It is an integrated solution for contact management, personnel, accounting, donor services, conference organisation and more.
The software will support organisations of various sizes and is multi-user, multi-site, multi-currency and multi-language enabled; therefore it will be usable in many contexts and across the globe. It will specifically support international, distributed organisations with offices in many countries.
The vision of openPETRA is to be an established administration software solution for non-profit organisations, offered without a licence fee.

Background:
openPETRA is an initiative of OM (www.om.org), a Christian missions organisation. It is a new package based on PETRA, an established product in OM for many years. PETRA is an in-house developed, bespoke product. OM has a need to replace it because it is built on a quickly ageing, proprietary technology platform and decided to do a complete re-write based on current technologies and on non-proprietary software. OM also decided to open it up and generalise the software so it can be useful for many non-profit organisations. So openPETRA was launched in March 2009 - an open source project, which is something completely new for OM.

Because we are still learning different aspects of developing open source software, we are interested in getting to know people who have experience in open source projects. We are actively seeking to engage with contributors - organisations and individuals - to build a community of developers, supporters and users, with the goal of making this project a success for many non-profit organisations.

Pointstream - Rendering mass point cloud data using WebGL

Images are viable products being sold on the web through sites like Corbis Images. The next step in advancing the technology would be 3D imaging. Currently, there is no open method or library that helps to render images that have been scanned with 3D imaging equipment. In conjunction with Arius3D, we have developed Pointstream in order to deal with large amounts of point cloud data obtained from scanned 3D imaging.

Pressing the BigBlueButton

Universities and colleges are increasing moving their lectures on-line. There are about 150 commercial web-conferencing systems that could be used for distance education, but very few viable open source alternatives. The BigBlueButton project has been working for the past two years to create a viable choice for an open source web conferencing system for distance education.
BigBlueButton is not a small project: in addition to its own code, it uses fifteen other open source packages: asterisk, activemq, asterisk-java, Flex SDK, ghostscript, groovy, grails, imagemagick, mysql, nginx, red5, swf tools, scala, tomcat6, and OpenOffice.
This talk will cover the real-world challenges we’ve faced in managing the growth of this project: specifically, UI design, testing, packaging, and integration with other open source and closed source products.

Release Engineering at Mozilla through buildbot

Release Engineering at Mozilla is a very large team compared to other companies in the industry. Few of the success stories that we have accomplished is to grow from 86 machines to around 1200 machines, to handle only 900 checkins per month to more than 2700 and have done releases within 24 hours instead of 10 days.

Thinking Outside the Book: Wikis for Writing and Delivering Documentation

Documentation. It's a necessary part of any FOSS project. But the traditional methods for delivering documentation to users are mired in a sometimes unnecessary level of complexity. On top of that, updates to the documentation often can't be made and deployed quickly.

Enter the wiki. It's not just for a techie's app. A wiki can be a powerful tool for writing and delivering documentation.

In this talk, Scott Nesbitt will explore the constantly evolving role of wikis in the creation and distribution of documentation. Drawing on a number of real-world example, Scott will discuss:

* The benefits of using wikis for documentation
* How Open Source projects use wikis to deliver documentation
* The technologies used to get content into and out of wikis
* The pros and cons of involving your community of users in the documentation process
* When a wiki might not be the best choice for delivering documentation
